Woolwich Wednesdays

Classic films writ large

Not long after installing a large projector screen at our house, it became clear we had to find some way to share the love and the glory of an excessively large display.

Every Wednesday at 8pm we're going to show a great film on it, with food and drinks and good times.

We're calling this Woolwich Wednesdays.

If you know me or Rob personally and would like to come along, drop me an email and I'll give you directions. We've no idea how popular this will be, so it's first-email-first-served if we run out of room.

The films will be whatever the hell I choose, but I'm open to suggestion. We'll put on food and drink, but fuck knows what or how much. Rob is insisting we have a popcorn maker, so there's that.

There might be room for people to stay over after, but that's a very limited offer for special circumstances only.

I'm not going to put directions or specific location on here. If you don't know us well enough to be able to ask privately, you probably shouldn't be coming. Woolwich is about 30 minutes from Bank, Charing Cross, London Bridge, or Waterloo.

Yaaaay films!

Scott Pilgrim vs the World

"In musicals, when the emotion gets too much to show on screen, they break into song. In Scott Pilgrim, they break into fight." - Edgar Wright

One of Edgar's finest films, and a great cinematic experience. It's visually stunning, has a great soundtrack, and mostly Canadian to boot! Lovely.

Hackers

This 1994 release was a little too early for me to see it in the cinema, so this'll be a real treat for me. This is finest piece of art ever committed to film and makes Casablanca look like.. well.. Casablanca. OK so it's terrible and we know it but it's a classic, and we love it.

More computing buzzwords than a start-up's marketing department, it discusses important political matters such as privacy, big government, and red vinyl catsuits.

Booyah.

The Big Lewbowski

"Here's a quote, 'If you don't like this movie, you're a fucking idiot', but don't put that on the site." - Robert Hesketh

This Coen brothers classic dark comedy evokes nostalgia for a time that never quite was. The film spawned a cult following and after your 17th viewing you'll definitely see why people love it so much.

Every character is memorable, every line of dialogue is quotable, although if you do it on the night you might get a foot up your arse.

Join us for an evening of dressing gowns and white russians or else we'll cut off your johnson. [Fancy dress not required]

Roll over for a synopsis:

Jeffrey Lebowski, better known as "The Dude", becomes embroiled in a world of debt and danger when he is mistaken for a similarly named business tycoon by thugs looking for money.

Aided by his bowling buddies Walter and Donny, The Dude embarks upon a quest to discover the truth, bring bad men to justice, and, most importantly, get his rug back.

Top Gun

Ah, Top Gun. This classic volleyball romcom (with occasional fighter jets) is packed with the finest music and top-notch homoeroticism that the 80s had to offer.

This is 1987 at its most raw, with big hair and even bigger engines. Powerful acting performances from such greats as 80s Val Kilmer, 80s Tom Cruise, and that bloke from ER.

It returns now, back on the big screen for the first time in oh god now I'm reading the IMDB trivia. Did you know Val Kilmer was contractually forced against his will to work on this film?

Anyway, come see it, it's great.

Apollo 13

The based-on-reality story of the failed 1970 moon-landing attempt, Apollo 13 (1995) is alternately calm and frenetic, serious and funny, and reaches to the humanity of the subject matter without ever being dull.

With just the right mix of action, suspense, and humour, with a grounded reality which stems from the true-story nature of the film, Apollo 13 is eminently rewatchable and one of my firm favourites.

Even with the slightly ageing CGI, I guarantee this will be the most real film you'll see this year.

24 Hour Party People

Steve Coogan plays Tony Wilson in a semi-fictionalised sort-of-biography about his rise and fall in the Madchester music scene.

Many people remember him as a news reporter for Granada, but he was equally famous as the founder of Factory Records; the label which brought bands like Joy Division, Happy Mondays, and New Order to the attention of the world.

The story blends fact with anecdote and contains tons of cameos from the real people who are featured as characters. The film is alternately hilarious, tragic, deadly serious, and abstract.

I love this movie and I hope you'll enjoy it too.

Wednesday, June 20

Inception

Inception has a pretty decent storyline. I mean, it's not the most original in the world, but they explore some interesting concepts.

Cinematically, however, I am most taken with this film. Everything is top notch, including acting special effects, music, and wardrobe.

It's gonna be big, it's gonna be loud, and it's gonna be great.

Wednesday, June 27

Office Space

This one's for all you Dilberts out there. The definitive film for the disenfranchised cube-farmers of the world, Office Space is everything Horrible Bosses wishes it could've been.

Great performances all-round, it doesn't have a bad moment.

Anyone showing up late will be required to redo their TPS reports and go ahead and come in on Saturday.

Wednesday, July 4

Independence Day

This is one film I'm pretty much guaranteed to show on every anniversary of its release.

16 years ago, Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum hit the screen punching aliens and presidents alike. It's kinda dumb, it's very American; a microcosm of July 4th itself.

Welcome to erf.

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back

Empire is by far my favourite of the Star Wars saga. Maybe that's because it was on TV a shitload when I was a kid, but despite containing precisely no death stars, it still feels like the one with the most coherent threat to the good guys.

Jedi or no Jedi, Vader gonna fuck you up.

Wednesday, August 15

Event Horizon

Without a doubt the best space horror from the 90s, this film will entertain when it isn't scaring you shitless.

Sam Neill puts in a fine performance alongside Laurence Fishburne with a well-acted cast of characters in there to boot.

Be there or face the wrath of the spaceghost! Not suitable for those allergic to space and/or ghosts.
